Autumn in Bulgaria
Should the sudden turn in the weather have left you in any doubt – autumn has well and truly arrived. September has lived up to its usual unpredictable weather with temperatures dropping dramatically from unusually hot to extremely cold and we can just hope that October will bring us some relief with its typical Indian summer, referred to in Bulgarian as a ‘gypsy summer’. Take advantage of any glorious autumn weather by visiting some of Bulgaria’s many attractive tourist sites and villages before winter arrives.
The new school year finally got under way on 15th September after 3 long hot summer months.
Traffic congestion in Sofia is now once again a regular event for all those who have to move about the city and things only seem to be getting worse. Be warned that you can find major roads blocked or closed with little helpful information about diversions.
Bulgaria celebrated on 22nd September 100 years of independence from Turkish rule. Politically the main topic is Sofia’s ongoing refuse crisis and economically the country is holding its breath to see what effect the global crisis will have on the country.
Autumn is traditionally a time when Bulgarians start preparing for winter and this includes the preservation of fruit and vegetables for the winter months. The aroma of peppers being roasted seems to envelope the country and is a pleasant and tasty distraction from day to day headaches.
The social and cultural calendars start to fill up and a whole string of charity events can be expected in the period leading up to Christmas. The most interesting events will be posted on this site.
