Most properties available for rent offer some form of security. An alarm system preferably linked to a security firm is a must (sorry!). Foreigners are attractive targets for burglaries, especially when the property is vacant, although there has been an increase recently in night time break-ins based on the assumption that the alarms are disengaged when people are home. Alternatives to alarms include living in secure compounds, hiring a guard, or keeping a guard dog (although sadly these are sometimes drugged or poisoned before a break in).
